What speeding up a clip actually does
A speed increase is a time-compression operation. The editor skips frames at a regular interval so that a longer stretch of footage fits into a shorter duration. A 30-second clip at 3x plays in 10 seconds.
Resolution and visual quality are not affected by the speed change itself. Quality is determined at export: the codec, bitrate, and resolution you set at the end of your edit, not the multiplier applied to the source.
Audio is a separate matter. At modest multipliers (up to 2x), most editors apply pitch correction automatically so speech does not distort. At 4x and above, pitch correction breaks down. The audio is typically muted or swapped with music at those speeds.
File size decreases after a speed-up because fewer seconds of footage means fewer encoded frames in the output container. The exact reduction depends on the codec and the multiplier, but a 2x speed increase on a 100MB clip will often produce a 50 to 60MB result.
Which multiplier works for each use case
Not every speed-up job needs the same ratio. Here is what each range produces in practice.
1.25x to 1.5x compresses talk-heavy content without making the speaker sound rushed. Dead air, long pauses, and hesitations disappear. Tutorials, screen recordings, and explainer videos all read as tighter without feeling sped-up to the viewer.
2x works well for step-by-step instructional footage where the visual progress matters but narration is not central. A 10-minute walkthrough becomes a compact 5-minute clip. YouTube chapters and online course segments benefit from this range.
4x to 8x moves into time-lapse territory. Use it for transition b-roll, atmospheric footage of a commute or a street scene, a cooking setup, or any clip where the visual change is the point rather than the detail. Keep audio muted at 4x and above.
16x and above compresses footage into near-abstract motion. Useful for intro backgrounds, looping overlays, or establishing shots where you want movement without readable pace. Footage shot at 60fps handles extreme compression better than 24fps source because there are more frames available to sample from.
How to speed up a video on desktop
DaVinci Resolve (free, Windows, macOS, Linux)
Right-click the clip in the timeline and select Change Clip Speed. Enter a percentage: 200 for 2x, 300 for 3x, 150 for 1.5x. Check Ripple Sequence if you want downstream clips to shift automatically and close the gap left by the shortened clip. Pitch correction lives in the Inspector panel under Pitch. Adobe Premiere Pro
Right-click the clip, choose Speed/Duration, and enter the percentage or a target output duration. The Ripple Edit checkbox closes the gap automatically. At speeds above 4x, switching the Time Interpolation option to Optical Flow adds synthesized intermediate frames and produces noticeably smoother playback, particularly on footage with smooth camera movement.
iMovie (macOS and iOS)
Select the clip in the timeline and click the speedometer icon in the toolbar. Choose Fast or set a custom multiplier. iMovie supports up to 2x on regular clips captured outside the camera app. On iOS, the same control appears in the clip settings panel. For time-lapse footage shot natively in the iPhone camera app, higher multipliers are available.
Windows Photos and Clipchamp
Windows 11 ships with Clipchamp, a browser-based editor available from the Start menu. Select the clip, click the clock icon in the right panel, and choose a speed preset or enter a custom multiplier. The free tier exports in 1080p without watermark. Microsoft Photos supports speed adjustment on slow-motion clips only, so Clipchamp is the better choice for general-purpose speed changes on Windows without installing additional software.
CapCut (desktop, mobile, and web)
Select the clip, tap or click Speed, then choose Basic for a simple multiplier or Curve for keyframe-based variable acceleration. The Basic slider runs from 0.1x to 100x. The Curve editor lets you draw variable speed over time by placing and dragging keyframe nodes: start at 1x, push through a 4x ramp, drop to 0.5x for a slow-motion beat. This is one of the most accessible speed ramp interfaces available at no cost.
How to speed up a video in a browser or on mobile
Browser-based editors handle the common cases without requiring a software install. They work well on a shared machine, for one-off clips, or when you want to skip export settings.

Speed ramping: constant speed vs. variable acceleration
A flat multiplier applies the same rate across the entire clip. Speed ramping applies a variable rate using keyframes: the clip starts at 1x, accelerates to 4x through a defined transition, then cuts back to 0.5x for emphasis.

Speed ramps appear in short-form social content to give motion a deliberate visual punctuation. A straight cut from one clip to the next can feel abrupt. A 4-frame ramp from 1x to 4x reads as an intentional stylistic choice rather than a rough edit.
CapCut's Curve editor, DaVinci Resolve's Speed Ramp tool, and Premiere's Time Remapping control in the Effect Controls panel all support keyframe-based ramping. VEED.io supports constant speed multipliers only as of mid-2026.
Speeding up clips for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts
Short-form platforms reward pacing. A clip at 2x that originally ran 30 seconds plays back in 15 seconds, fitting the distribution window that each platform's recommendation algorithm prefers.
Reels performs well with instructional content at 1.5x when the original was recorded at a deliberate, demonstrative pace. TikTok trends frequently use speed ramps rather than flat multipliers because the visual contrast between slow and fast motion is part of the format's visual language.
For YouTube Shorts, aspect ratio matters more than speed for ranking, but completion rate tends to improve with tighter pacing. Instructional Shorts at 1.5x consistently hold more watch time per view than the same content at 1x.
One adjustment to plan for: if you are using burned-in captions (rendered directly onto the frames), those captions will appear at the sped-up rate and may flash by faster than the readable threshold of around 17 characters per second. Re-generate or re-time captions after locking the speed.
What happens to your subtitles after a speed change
Most speed tutorials stop before this part. It is also where most editors find a problem after export.

When you speed up a clip at 2x, the audio compresses. But any SRT or VTT file attached to the original was timed to the 1x audio. A subtitle block set to display from 00:00:05 to 00:00:07 now needs to appear at 00:00:02.5 to 00:00:03.5. Every timestamp in the file is wrong by the same factor.
Most editing tools do not automatically retime the subtitle track when you change clip speed. The captions appear late, overlap, or flash past too quickly to read. The readable threshold for standard subtitle display sits around 17 characters per second. At 2x, that window is cut in half.
Two practical approaches exist. The first is to retime the SRT file manually: divide every timestamp by the speed multiplier, and adjust line lengths to fit the compressed timing. This works but takes time on a long clip.
The second approach is simpler: lock the speed in your edit, export the clip, then re-generate captions from the final audio.
